Everyone has their own background history, quest and, more importantly, buffs and skills that you can benefit when they join your group. However, you can only take two at the same time while the rest is waiting on the ship while starting the adventure. That is to know who is best suited for which situation is most important, where you can actually find them (most stumbling on their way, if they still explore them).
