It has been 15 years since the last game numbered Age of Empires, and Relic Entertainment has put this time. The next Age of Empires IV will contain four complete campaigns and eight amazing playable civilizations at launch, and the numbers will only increase from there. The fan-stream organized this Saturday gave us an overview of one of these campaigns - in particular, the one based on the Norman conquest in the 11th century. This campaign promises to plunge players in some of the most legendary battles in European history, including the battle of Hastings, while they follow the conflict between Harold Godwinson, King of the Anglo-Saxons, and Guillaume the Conqueror.
The first four playable factions of the game will be the English, the Indian Sultanate of Delhi, Imperial China and the Mongols. Each faction is intended to play very differently from each other: for example, the nomadic mongols can pack their bases and do not build walls, the Sultanate of Delhi uses huge elephants of war and the Chinese soldiers have access to both to crossbows and rockets. With regard to campaigns, Relic promises to go further and include live drone images from some of the battlefields they represent. We can certainly see how it would add to realism. It could also bring a dark side to virtual war, a subtle reminder that these battles have really happened and people are really dead.
If it is not enough realism for you, so get this: as you progress in the Norman Conquest campaign, not only the visuals will change over the years, as well as the linguistic units will speak when you click on above. They will start talking about the old English of the Beowulf era and will gradually move to an English more Shakespearian to reflect the passage of time. That's a great thing.
Age of Empires IV will be available on PC in 2021. The game will also be launched on Xbox Game PC PC and Ultimate.
